Medical Insurance for New Immigrants to Canada

The cost of medical attention in Canada is prohibitive....until such time as you are eligible for Provincial Healthcare benefits. Generally speaking, new immigrants must wait at least 3 months before they are eligible for Provincial Healthcare coverage. During this time, you and your family are at your most vulnerable. Do not leave your country of origin without first applying for Canadian medical insurance. In our experience new immigrants should neither take the risk of being uninsured or underinsured, nor should they take out "travel insurance" coverage in their country of origin before emigrating. New immigrants and visitors to Canada should be aware of the following:

  • Uninsured medical claims will have a devastating financial consequence and could potentially ruin the prospective immigration;
  • Many medical institutions will not admit a patient unless they have reputable medical insurance policy in place;
  • The insurer in your country of origin is many miles away and potentially on a different time zone. Communication and administrative issues will arise;
  • Most foreign insurers will insure "travellers" who intend to return to their country of origin. If your intention is to emigrate then there is a real risk that any claim could be repudiated;
  • Foreign insurers will likely insist on a patient travelling back to their home country for treatment of a condition, as opposed to receiving treatment locally and expediently;
  • ProfMed has assisted many hundreds of new immigrants to Canada and we are therefore able to source the best coverage at the most competitive rates;
  • Many of our clients have had excellent claims experience and have relied on us and our insurers at the time when they needed help the most.
  • Based on our experience we always recommend a minimum coverage limit of $ 50,000 per person
